At the June meeting we welcomed back the Stourbridge historian, Roy Peacock.
He told the meeting of the achievements and donations of Ernest Stevens and his wife Mary.
Ernest was born in Lye of humble beginnings but by his determination and salesmanship he became a wealthy manufacturer of cookware.
From iron to enamelled saucepans the ‘Judge’ brand became famous worldwide. He and his wife were Methodists and through their generosity gave the people of Stourbridge the parks in Quarry Bank, Wollaston and of course Mary Stevens park in Stourbridge.
He provided the Mary Stevens Maternity Home and the Amblecote Memorial Sports ground.
The society meets at the Community Centre, High Street, Kingswinford on the first Monday in the month at 7.30pm. The next meeting is on July 7 when Max Clifford will be telling about ‘The Development of the Nailer’s Cottage’. New members and visitors are always welcome, tea and biscuits are provided after the meeting.”
