Our speaker, David Tyler, called his talk From Workhouse to Council House.

His grandfather was reared in a workhouse for eighteen years and then served in the First World War.His father served in the Second World War and David joined the Police Force in 1964 beginning a career he thoroughly enjoyed. He became a member of Traffic Division where he stayed for 18 years.

During this time he often had the harrowing task of telling a family they had lost a loved one in an accident.

He became a Fire Arms Officer and did terrorist duty, complete with machine gun at Birmingham Airport.

Later he served in The Royal Diplomatic Protection Division where he met many members of The Royal Family, of whom he spoke with great affection, especially Diana.

After retirement in 1995 he became a councillor, being involved with many issues including the prevention of the expansion of Halfpenny Green Airport and stopping a new quarry from opening locally. He showed us several photos and articles of police clothing plus a weighty truncheon.

Ena Baker thanked him for a most interesting talk.

Three raffle prizes were won. There will be no meeting in August and the Harvest Supper will be for members only on September 4th.Gifts for the Harvest table will be welcome.
