POLICE are looking to trace a group of people with a child who stopped to help after a man was viciously assaulted in an unprovoked attack in a Kingswinford park.

The 39-year-old victim was left unconscious with head, face and rib injuries after the incident in George VI Park off Green Lane.

Police say the victim had been walking through the park when he was approached by a man who for no reason became aggressive and threatening before attacking him when he tried to turn away.

The man suffered deep cuts to his forehead, a black eye, bruising to his jaw and injuries to his ribs and arm in the incident, which happened between 6.30pm and 7pm on Wednesday August 6, and which DC Craig Whittaker, from Force CID in Smethwick, described as a "particularly nasty attack".

DC Whittaker added: "The assault was completely unprovoked and we want to find the person responsible as soon as possible. Enquiries in the area are on-going but we would ask anyone who may have information about this incident or those involved to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Three people who were with a child found the man lying on the footpath and stopped to help - and police are now keen to trace them to see if they have any information which can help their investigation.

DC Whittaker continued: "They stopped to help immediately after the assault however we do not know their identities. They could have information which is really useful to our enquiries and we urge them to come forward as soon as possible."

The attacker is described as an Asian man, aged 23 to 25, around five feet 11, of athletic/stocky build, with eyes described as close together. He also had short black wispy hair - and a short black beard.

With him was a white woman, aged 22, about five feet five, with long dark hair.

Anyone with information about the attack or the offender is urged to call police on 101.
