MEMBERS of Kingswinford U3A could not have imagined they would be meeting the next British Prime Minister when they bumped into Theresa May during a trip to Parliament last week.

Dudley South MP Mike Wood had organised a tour for a coach load of members from Kingswinford University of the 3rd Age group last Thursday (July 7) and during the visit they met the woman who was today (Wednesday) set to become the country’s second-only female Prime Minister.

Mrs May, the Government's Home Secretary since 2010, was on her way to hear the penultimate results of the Conservative Party leadership contest when she stopped to talk to the group.

Margaret Aston, vice-chairman of the group which meets daily at Kingswinford Community Centre, said: “It was quite unexpected, we were having a tour with Mike Wood and we asked him if the voting had finished, and he was looking at his phone and was just about to tell us what the result was and Theresa May came out and stopped by.

“She was obviously so pleased and elated by the look on her face. She knew she was down to the last two.

“Mike then introduced us to her as members of the U3A.

“It was really lovely – the numbers had just come out and there she was.

"That was quite exciting for all of us.”

Dudley News:

Just days later, Mrs May was confirmed as the next Prime Minister after nearest rival Andrea Leadsom pulled out of the race to replace David Cameron in the top job.

Mr Wood, who had originally backed Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb for the position before becoming a Theresa May supporter in the final days of the campaign, said of her appointment: "Theresa clearly has the experience and the strength of leadership to lead the country through the challenges ahead.

"She is absolutely committed to carrying out voters' decision to leave the EU but - more importantly - she is absolutely committed to improving people's opportunities in life, regardless of where they're from, what school they went to or what their parents did for a living.”
