AUTOMATED rhythm machines created by Stourbridge artist Paul Gittins will be showcased at an exhibition in Netherton.

The “orchestra that plays itself” will be on display at the Netherton Arts Centre from Friday July 19 until Saturday August 3.

Mr Gittins, of Norton, will be at the event opening from 6.30pm to 9pm to explain the concept behind his pieces, which produce different rhythms when instrument strings are struck by oak apples, powered by clock motors at one second intervals.

Instruments used in the exhibition include a mandolin and small guitar.

The artist, who makes the pieces in his workshop on High Street, Stourbridge, said: “It is an orchestra that plays itself, it makes ambient music. It is difficult to say how long it takes me to make.”

The free exhibition at the Northfield Road centre also features charcoal drawings from Stourbridge based Harry Seager, abstract paintings from Rotterdam-born Elsa Houghton and metal works from Kathy Sullivan.

The exhibition will be open to the public daily between 12pm and 3.30pm.
