COMEDY internet character Doreen will be making her stage debut in the borough this weekend.

The fictional-out-of-work mum, thought up by Black Country playwright David Tristram, became a YouTube sensation last year when more than a million viewers watched with laughter as she bemoaned her life on benefits in the mockumentary video Doreen’s Story.

Such was the interest in the spoof character, who suffers from ‘lazy cow syndrome’, that Quarry Bank born David decided to devise a stage play - which comes to Dudley this Saturday (October 12).

Walsall based actress Gill Jordan will reprise her role as Black Country accented mum Doreen for An Audience With Doreen which is being staged at Dudley College’s Evolve Theatre.

Tickets for the show, however, have all been snapped up.

In fact ten out of 12 scheduled outings across the Black Country have sold out.

David said: “It's fantastic to see the appetite for the Doreen stage tour is just as voracious as it was for the original YouTube viral.

“The opening night at Broseley was our first chance to see what a live audience made of the show, and they raised the roof, so we're all very encouraged.”

As well as the stage plays, there’s also been talk of developing Doreen into a TV character.

David says he has received interest from TV executives in the UK and overseas keen to pursue the idea and he’s already developed his own TV pilot.

But in the meantime he’s now busy planning ‘Doreen - The Movie’.

The ambitious writer/director, the man behind the popular Inspector Drake stage plays and films, hopes to use the popular technique of crowdfunding to raise cash to bring Doreen to the big screen next spring.

David said: “We’ve already we've had pledges coming in from those who saw the first show, so the Doreen juggernaut seems to be gaining momentum.”

In the meantime comedy fans desperate to catch Doreen on stage can try Hall Green Little Theatre (Thursday October 24), which has around 40 tickets left, and The Dovehouse in Solihull (Saturday October 26) which has just two tickets remaining.
