A 22-YEAR-OLD year old Quarry Bank man who grabbed his vulnerable former partner by the hair and dragged her along the ground before threatening to stab her with a craft knife has been jailed.

Matthew Webb, of Anne Road, was sentenced to nine months in prison after he admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, common assault and possessing the knife.

Recorder Edward Hess at Wolverhampton Crown Court told him. "What you did was disgraceful. "You should be utterly ashamed of what you did."

He said Webb had launched one attack on his ex-girlfriend before going back to assault her for a second time, adding: "You then used a Stanley knife which is an aggravating feature of the case."

Paul Reid, prosecuting, said Webb had been in a relationship with the woman and they lived together at her Dudley home but after an argument he pushed her to the floor.

She suffered bruising to her forehead and arm and Webb then grabbed her from behind by the hair and pulled her along the ground, he told the court.

Then, later the same day, he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her for a second time and she suffered grazing before he produced the Stanley knife and told her: "I am going to stab you."

Mr Reid said the woman, a mother-of-three, sustained a cut to a finger as she struggled with Webb who was later described as a "Jekyll and Hyde" character.

Gurdeep Garcha, defending, said Webb accepted it had been a disgraceful episode, adding: "He knows there is no excuse for what he did.

"It was one on-going episode of domestic violence and what happened is a matter of deep regret to him."

But the Recorder ruled only immediate jail was appropriate for the crimes.
