AN Amblecote man has been remanded in prison on suspicion of trying to carry out four shop robberies across Stourbridge and Brierley Hill in little more than two hours.

Lee Cartwright, of Brompton Drive, was arrested by West Midlands Police from a Tipton address in the early hours of Sunday morning (October 25) in connection with the raids on the evening of September 27.

It is alleged that Cartwright was involved in an armed robbery attempt at Premier Stores, in Malvern Avenue, Lye, at 7.25pm and failed in another robbery at an off licence in Quarry Bank High Street 30 minutes later.

The 24-year-old also stands accused of stealing cigarettes from Kingsway Stores, in Kingsway, Wollaston, at 9.25pm, before a last unsuccessful raid on a chip shop in Hill Street, Brierley Hill, at 10pm.

He appeared before Dudley Magistrates Court on Monday (October 26) charged with a total of three attempted robberies, one robbery and one count of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Unemployed Cartwright was remanded into prison and will next appear in Wolverhampton Crown Court on January 26.
