A QUARRY Bank man has been charged by police after an incident before Saturday’s Stoke v Wolves FA Cup game left a pub doorman needing medical treatment for an eye injury.

Christopher Ward, aged 30, of Farm Road, was charged with a public order offence following the incident at The Wheatsheaf pub in Stoke-on-Trent at about 10.50am.

Simon Evans, aged 33, of Wentworth Road, Wolverhampton, was arrested and charged with assault by beating for the same incident.

Both men have since been bailed by police and will now appear at Newcastle Magistrates Court on Tuesday February 7.

During the match, which saw 5,000 Wolverhampton Wanderers fans travel up the M6 to the potteries, Staffordshire Police officers made three arrests involving fans.

The other arrest involved a 16 year-old youth from the Stafford area who was detained after a flare was set off during the game. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Ch Insp Pete Owen, who was the match commander for Saturday, said: “It's fair to say it was a busy match for us and tensions were high.

“However, effective deployments of stewards and officers on the ground meant there were no other incidents during the game.

“A great deal of planning had gone into how we approached the match in view of the extra away fans who were allowed to attend.

“The stewards worked really effectively with our officers and together, we ensured there was little in the way of disorder.”
