A DRUNKEN Sedgley thief got a year-long hangover after he fell asleep in a car outside the home he raided.

James Rollinson took a bagful of property he stole in a burglary to his own home before returning to the scene of the crime - and nodding off.

He had taken the keys to the car in the raid in Thornfield Croft, Sedgley, along with jewellery of sentimental value, a games console, a laptop and a camera.

Alka Brigue, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court Rollinson had earlier seen Diane Goodyear, who lived in the three-bedroom property, drinking in Monty's Wine Bar in Sedgley.

The 20-year-old crook knew her home was empty and he smashed a side window with a brick to gain access.

The missing goods - apart from the camera - were later recovered from Rollinson's home in Downfield Drive and returned to Miss Goodyear.

Jas Mann, for Rollinson said his client, who was jailed for 12 months, was "tanked up" after a heavy drinking session and he had little recollection of the burglary.

Mr Mann said: "He was not in a sober, sensible and rational state of mind. It was because he was intoxicated that he got involved in this enterprise."

Recorder Denis Desmond told Rollinson who admitted the burglary it was clear he had targeted the house knowing Miss Goodyear was out enjoying herself with friends.

He added: "You took her property to your home, you came back and you got into her car and then you fell asleep."

The court was told a neighbour heard the window being smashed and alerted police. Rollinson was then found a short time later asleep in the back of the parked car.
