Council joins drive for more blood and organ donors
9:25am Thursday 19th July 2012 in Dudley Council Noticeboard
Council chiefs in Dudley have signed up to a potentially life saving partnership aimed at encouraging more people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register and give blood.
Dudley Council has become one of just two local authorities to sign up to the new partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).
The agreement aims to help increase the organ and blood donation rates among both its staff and borough residents.
The announcement will see the council encourage people to sign up to the Organ Donor Register (ODR) and consider becoming blood donors.
The percentage of people on the ODR in the Dudley Council area is currently just 19 per cent at 58,866 signatories, compared to a national average of 30 per cent. Meanwhile, more than 60 people in the borough need an organ transplant.
Similarly, Dudley has only 6,565 active blood donors, meaning that only 2.14 per cent of local people give blood, compared to a national figure of four per cent.
Councillor Steve Waltho, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:
“This is a potentially life saving agreement we have in place. We hope this will not only increase awareness of the importance of blood and organ donors, but also encourage more people to sign up.
“We have made a commitment to encouraging our residents and staff to do what they can to help save people’s lives.”
It is hoped that the initiative will provide a significant increase in the number of Dudley borough’s residents who are on the ODR and a particular focus will be placed on increasing registration levels among Dudley’s black and Asian communities. The partnership will initially be in place for two years.
Sally Johnson, NHSBT’s director of organ donation and transplantation, added:
”We are delighted to be launching this innovative collaboration with Dudley Council which will, I hope, see more people in Dudley adding their names to the Organ Donor Register and becoming regular blood donors.
“As a trusted organisation at the heart of its community, the council will help us to directly reach out to people in the Dudley area and make them aware of the need for more blood and organ donors.”
