THERE were celebrations at Albion Lodge retirement home, in Hanley Swan, as one of its residents celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mary Ripley, who was born in Canada but moved to England when she was just a few weeks old, celebrated her big day with her family, who live locally.

She marked her big day on Friday, July 24 by enjoying champagne and cake, as well as receiving a birthday card from the Queen.

After coming to England, Mrs Ripley was raised by her aunt and uncle.

When asked what she believed was the secret of a long and health life, she said "being looked after".

This had always been the case for Mrs Ripley, first by her aunt and uncle and then by her late husband of more than 40 years, Geoffrey.

Mrs Ripley is still active and enjoys keeping busy by reading, writing letters and watching the news.
