A SPECIAL candle was lit at a Bromsgrove venue for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).

Bromsgrove was one of just 70 nationally that was chosen to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenhau concentration camp.

Earlier today, (January 27), Bromsgrove District Council's deputy civic head Councillor Helen Jones lit the candle, designed by famous artist Sir Anish Kapoor, at the annual Holocaust Memorial Event held by the authority.

Bromsgrove's event, held at the Council House, was chosen from hundreds of applications sent to the HMD Trust, the charity responsible for marking the day in the UK.

The lighting of the candle began a moment of reflection honouring the survivors of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

School pupils and representatives from the Bromsgrove Muslim Community Trust, Bromsgrove Indian Community Forum and the Jewish Community.

Cllr Jones said: “The Holocaust event in Bromsgrove remains an important one for raising awareness of the atrocities of the past and honouring the survivors of such events.

"I am proud to say that Bromsgrove was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to receive one of the 70th anniversary candles.”
