REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley has welcomed the governments proposed changes which would give English and Welsh MPs a veto over devolved matters which only affect them.

The introduction of ‘English votes for English laws’ will see changes that make the law-making process sustainable in the long term and fair to all parts of the UK.

Under the plans every MP will continue to have a vote on every Bill.

But English MPs will now have a veto in Westminster when debating matters that have been devolved to the Scottish Parliament or the Welsh or Northern Ireland Assemblies.

The change comes after Mrs Lumley and a number of her colleagues presented a petition to Parliament in March on behalf of their constituents calling for fair votes.

The MP said: “The people of Redditch county rightly expect a fair settlement for all parts of the United Kingdom.

"We want to be able to decide our own priorities on issues such as health, education and local government, just as the people of Scotland are currently able to do. It is a basic unfairness that in the current system Scottish MPs can currently vote on English-only issues. The English veto is a simple, but important change that will remove this injustice.”
