BOROUGH residents who are looking for volunteer opportunities are being asked to offer their support to a befriending service for vulnerable people.

The aim of the scheme, which has been developed by Dudley Council’s housing support team, is to provide one-to-one and group assistance to housing tenants who are lonely, isolated or facing a difficult time.

The scheme intends to help people gain a more positive outlook by becoming more involved in society, such as attending a new group, gaining a new interest or making new friends.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for housing, said: “The befriending service was launched in July 2014 and it has already made a positive impact upon individuals’ lives.

“We match those in need of assistance with a volunteer who offers appropriate assistance, for instance introducing them to new interests which will provide regular social contact.

“Since its launch we have had 30 people volunteer and receive the relevant training and support. Anyone interested in helping out with the scheme should give us a call.”

Volunteers will have to provide friendly, informal support by forming partnerships with the users and, whenever possible, a befriender is matched with someone with the same interests.

Befrienders should be at least 18 years of age, checks will be conducted before recruitment and full training will also be provided.
