THE RIVER Severn at Worcester has peaked and should begin to recede, according to the Environment Agency (EA).

Despite earlier concerns that the showers forecast for this weekend may cause further flooding, the EA has reassured residents river levels should not rise again.

This weekend is set to be chilly and cloudy, with some snow showers predicted for the region.

At the time of going to press there were four flood warnings in place across Worcestershire, including two for Worcester at Pitchcroft and Diglis, along with three flood alerts.

On Friday morning Dave Throup, of the EA, tweeted to say: "Severn has peaked at Diglis #worcester now but expect levels to remain very high for a couple of days."

He later added: "Flood warnings now limited to lower Severn & levels falling."

Sections of Pitchcroft Car Park in Worcester were blocked off due to flooding, while the EA warned Pitchcroft Lane, Waterworks Road, Newport Street, Hood Street and Quay Street could also be affected.

Flood gates and barriers are in operation at Upton-upon-Severn, where as Hanley Road, New Street and Dunns Lane remained closed due to flood water.

Worcester City Council tweeted on Friday afternoon to remind residents not to attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

An EA spokesperson said: "The River Severn peaked last night in Worcester and will now begin to recede. We may receive some isolated showers over the weekend and into early next week.

"These are not expected to increase river levels. The river levels across the county are comparable to what we have seen this winter so far.

"During the last week, several flood alleviation schemes have been operational. We have also shut flood gates and deployed barriers to reduce flood risk for communities at Bewdley, Kempsey, Upton upon Severn and Uckinghall.

"We are closely monitoring the weather and its likely impacts and we also have teams out clearing debris on key watercourses to ensure water can flow."

This weekend temperatures will remain very low, but above freezing, reaching a high of around 4°C on Saturday and 6°C on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday will be mainly cloudy, with a chance of sleet and snow showers across the West Midlands.
