OUT-PATIENTS at Ludlow Community Hospital who attend the Ultrasound scanning clinics will benefit from the latest design of consulting couch thanks to the enthusiasts of the Brimfield Vintage Club.

Club members decided that, to celebrate their 22nd anniversary, they would donate the proceeds from their annual working day to the League of Friends of Ludlow Hospital.

“It came as a complete surprise to us,” said Peter Corfield, chairman of the league.

“But was nonetheless most welcome. We have spent more than £94,000 on equipment this year, mainly to provide more services locally, including ophthalmic equipment and an ultrasound scanner.

“The scanner had cost £51,000 and the donation from Brimfield Vintage Club enabled us to provide a sophisticated and extremely comfortable examination couch to complement the scanner.”

Prior to the installation of the new equipment, patients had to travel to Shrewsbury or Telford for ultrasound examination, which is a non-invasive diagnostic system using high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation to create an image of some part of the inside of the body.

Ultrasound travels through soft tissue and fluids but it will echo off denser surfaces, detecting conditions such as bladder or gall stones. The Ludlow scanner is used mainly to detect problems in the liver, heart, kidney or the abdomen.

Brimfield Vintage Club encourages the preservation and restoration of agricultural and related vehicles and equipment, ranging from small stationary engines to massive tractors, harvesters, and road vehicles.
