HARRIERS supporters are lacing up their boots to tackle a 48 mile walk to Cheltenham in memory of Kidderminster teacher, Becky Giddins, who lost her battle with skin cancer last year.

The Kidderminster Harriers Independent Supporters Trust (KHIST) will tackle the long walk in April to raise £10,000 for the Queen Elizabeth Fighting Skin Cancer Appeal in Becky's memory.

Becky - who was a PE teacher at King Charles I School and a founding member of Worcester City Netball Club - died peacefully at her home on August 8, last year, surrounded by her close family, friends and devoted husband, Kevin.

She had been suffering with metastatic melanoma, which meant cancer cells had spread to other areas of her body - including her lymph nodes and lung.

More than 50 walkers will leave Aggborough at 6am on Friday, April 7, and walk towards Stourport before following the River Severn all the way to Tewksbury - 36 miles. The group will then stop overnight and complete the final 12 miles to Cheltenham for the Harriers fixture against Gloucester City on Saturday, April 8.

This is the third walk KHIST have organised - having raised £38,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2014, after completing a 65 mile walk in memory of Steve Millington, and just short of £20,000 for Towards Tomorrow Together in 2015, after completing a 34 mile walk in memory Charlotte May Pountney.

Karl Davies, co-organiser, said: "This year our walk will be in memory of Becky Giddins, a local school teacher and key netball player. She was a very popular teacher in Kidderminster and her parents have been involved with Harriers for many years.

"We have more 50 people registered to walk which is great. Becky's husband, Kevin, will be joining us for the whole walk, while her parents are joining us for the last 12 miles on the Saturday.

"A lot of Becky's friends and ex-colleagues are also getting involved.

"Thirty-six miles is a long way - even for fit people. It is a long length of time on your feet - as soon as you stop, it's pretty painful.

"We are hoping to raise £10,000 from this year's walk. We want to raise as much money as possible in Becky's memory.

"King Charles I School are also supporting us in the walk and they have arranged a non-uniform event on the day of the walk.

"We have a 20 mile practice walk coming up in a few weeks."

CMS Vauxhall will be sponsoring the t-shirts for the first day of the walk, while Hire It will be providing the transport back home after the match.
