STORM Doris left her mark on a Stourbridge cul-de-sac where part of a towering tree crashed through the roof of an elderly woman's home this morning (Thursday).

Firefighters from Stourbridge Fire Station were called out to Fox Covert at 10.52am after a massive tree branch overhanging from the derelict Longlands School site fell on the roof a house next door.

The incident left a hole in 87-year-old Mavis Hart's roof and also brought the telephone line down.

Her son Gordon Hart said the family had worried about the tree coming down in high winds and he added: "We were almost expecting it to happen."

Stourbridge News:

Neighbour Elaine Jacomb said she has been contacting Birmingham Metropolitan College, which owns the old school site, for the last five years and has warned repeatedly of the dangers of the large trees on the site boundary which tower over people's homes.

She said: "I've got nothing against trees but they should be controlled. The branches that have come down - you wouldn't believe it."

Watch commander Dave Smith from Stourbridge Fire Station said firefighters had cut away the dangerous hanging branches and put a temporary repair on the roof.

A spokesman for Birmingham Metropolitan College said: "My colleagues were on site this morning and will take the necessary action to keep the area secure.

"We’ll also stay in touch with residents concerned about the effects of the storm."
