PUPILS at the Wyche School in Malvern Wells got to learn some of the secrets of science and Malverns' own role in the development of radar and infra-sed sensing.

David Whitaker and John Gillham of Malvern Radar And Technology History Society visited the school at the invitation of teacher Nick Pett to talk to Years Four and Five as a part of their studies into World War Two.

Mr Whitaker explained the development of radar by scientists and engineers who moved to Malvern College during the war, before moving to the site currently occupied by QinetiQ.

Mr Gillham told the pupils what infrared was and how Malvern had played a leading role in developing infrared detecting technology. He described the widespread need for and use of this technology.

They then led the students in experiments using infrared cameras, and the students took turns to see themselves on the screen in infrared.

Mr Pett thanked Mr Whitaker and Mr Gillham for their, the students gave a round of applause and the two visitors thanked the students for their interest and enthusiasm.
