A DRIVER hit speeds of up to 145 mph on the M5 in Worcestershire after he panicked when he saw police, a court heard.

Keiron Weaver, 22, was on his way back from a holiday with a group of friends in Amsterdam, Worcester Crown Court was told.

Paul Mytton, prosecuting, said the driver of the VW Golf he and Weaver were travelling in felt too tired to drive when they reached Strensham services at about 9.20pm on August 17 last year so Weaver took the wheel even though he only had a provisional licence.

He panicked when he saw police and drove northbound towards Worcester at speeds up to 145 mph dodging in and out of traffic, Mr Mytton said. He was arrested after stopping.

Weaver, of Halstead Street, Newport, Gwent, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of cannabis, having no insurance and not having the proper licence.

Ian Ball, defending, said Weaver had now cut down his use of cannabis and had two self-employed jobs as a plasterer and a dog breeder.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins, QC, said Weaver had driven at very high speeds and there was potential danger to other road users.

He was given a sentence of six months suspended for two years with 200 hours of unpaid work. He was banned from driving for two years and will have to take an extended re-test. He was also ordered to pay £1,500 towards costs.
