VOLUNTEERS at the Wyre Community Land Trust are bidding to bag a cash boost for their latest project from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The trust has made the shortlist for Tesco's initiative for their community wood workshop.

Dedicated volunteers at the Wyre Community Land Trust, near Bewdley, have been working hard to construct the community wood workshop. In order to complete it and get the workshop up and running, they need to raise £4,000 to complete an electrical outfit and the remaining construction.

So the workshop is a safe environment, the trust also needs funding to install a local exhaust ventilation system and to provide training for volunteers on how to safely use the wood working machines.

A spokesman for the Wyre Community Land Trust said: "If successful in obtaining this funding, there will be potential to provide more opportunities for local communities to get involved.

"People of any skill set can join our group, if they like learning new skills, using existing skills or simply meeting new people, our experienced volunteers and trainers will get our new recruits through every step."

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 - all raised from the 5p bag levy - being awarded to local community projects.

Shoppers are encouraged to head into their local Tesco store to vote throughout July and August. Customers will receive a token at the check-out each time they shop.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, added: "We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for July and August. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can't wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities."

The Bags of Help initiative has already delivered more than £30 million to more than 4,600 projects in the country.
