VISITORS to the Worcester Show have spoken of traffic "chaos" around the event.

The event in Gheluvelt Park, saw a record-breaking 18 per cent increase on last year, with more than 13,000 people visiting the show.

Guest to the show were directed via Pitchcroft Lane and onto Pope Iron Road, causing congestion in the area.

Posting on the Worcester News Facebook page, Emily Ashdown, a resident living on Pope Iron Road, said: “I've been out at work and now been sat trying to get to my house for half an hour - no thought to the residents with using Pope Iron Road to bring on cars.

She added: "Tell me how if an ambulance or fire engine needed to reach my house how it would be possible for them to do so?

"The road was grid locked with cars unable to go in any direction so for the health and safety of all those that live on that street this needs to be addressed.”

"Pitchcroft has other entrances so either they need to be utilised better or a filtration system of the cars being allowed down the road so that everyone is not all piling in to the same small one way street.

Paul Savage added: Excellent show but why don't they let everyone parking come on to Pitchcroft from the Croft Road end, the traffic was chaos and I'm sure it upsets the locals."

Cllr Louis Stephen, ward member for Battenhall, said: "It's become so successful that in many ways it has become a victim of its success. It would be good if next year there could be even more effort given to promoting walking and cycling options as well as staggering the day over a longer period so that visitors come at different times."

A city council spokesman said: “Leaflets were send to all residents in the neighbouring area – we said we expected it to be very successful.

They added: “We will be reviewing the parking next year.”

They also pointed out that for the first time ever money for parking and charitable donations were being offered at the gate and that this “no doubt” caused delays.
