UPTON claimed the top prize in a regional horticultural campaign and has been nominated for a national contest.

The town won the large village category and was awarded Gold in Heart of England in Bloom, following a visit from judges on Tuesday, July 18.

Upton can now take part in the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom contest next year.

Jackie Surtees, aged 69, chair of Upton in Bloom, was delighted with the result.

She said: "Getting Gold is good but winning the category is great.

"I think the displays were really good. It's not just the flowers, they are only 50 per cent of the marks, it's about the community and environment as well.

"Being nominated for Britain in Bloom is an honour, even though it's hard work.

"Heart of England nominated four and we were one of the four.

"The future is bright for Upton in Bloom. I'm looking forward to the national judging.

"It's hard work as we are judged twice in the Heart of England and then Britain in Bloom but we have done it before so we know what we can expect.

"We will have to try and get a Gold, we have only ever got Silver Gilt before."

Ms Surtees praised her 12 volunteers, who take part in gardening sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and said they now enjoy a weekly social drink.

She collected the town's trophy at an awards ceremony in Warwick Castle on Thursday, September 14.
