IT was result’s day for the city’s oldest pub on popular bed and breakfast competition Four in a Bed as the winner was crowned.

After a week of competition, it was left for the four owners to mull over the feedback and add up the scores.

With the final payments spread across the table, it was only down to the honest nature of Cardinal’s Hat owner Nigel Smith which kept him from collecting top spot.

As was the case earlier in the week, the couples were impressed by the Friar Street pub and that was reflected in the scores.

Lucinda and Diane from Springfield House B&B, Devon and Russ and Karen Colman who own a glamping site in mid-Wales both paid the full amount of £95 for their stays.

Mark and Jo from Torquay – who had found a hair on their pillow and were dismissive of Nigel’s open sugar bowl – said they would pay £95 towards their £110 room.

Nigel defended his policy of communal sugar and backed it up with his food hygiene credentials.

As the show progressed, it looked as though Nigel was going to romp home with the win but that was until the final couple – Lucinda and Diane – revealed their scores.

Astounded by his stay at Springfield House, Nigel overpaid by £20 saying his visit was ‘worth every penny’ and thus handed the victory to the friends from Devon.

Nigel was gracious in defeat and was content with finishing second.

Earlier in the week, the couples took on morris dancing before enjoying a meal at Saffron’s Bistro in New Street.
