A COUNCILLOR who is leading an anti-litter group has slammed the amount of rubbish being dumped.

Evesham Town Plan Anti-Litter Group was formed as part of the Evesham Town Plan to reduce the number of grot spots.

In their last pick on Saturday, the group were unhappy to find so much litter in Port Street.

Gerry O'Donnell, councillor for the area and leader of the group said: "It’s awful to see the way people treat our beautiful town. It may only be a small minority causing the issue but it negatively affects the larger population.

“The only way to put a stop to the problem is by encouraging a change in behaviour.

"For example, smokers need to realise the cigarette ends, packets and cellophane is litter, just like cans and plastic bottles, as there is a mindset that it isn’t.”

In total, 14 volunteers arrived and collected an impressive 25 bags of litter.

In Port Street there was a number of empty beer cans and plastic bottles found.

Cigarette butts were plentiful too, proving hard to pick for volunteers.

A significant amount of fly-tipped materials have also been found on a couple of locations, mainly the at the back of shop premises and near residential areas.

The problem can be quite severe as they often lead to rodent and insect infestations which will in turn damage the health of those in the area.

The Evesham Anti-Litter Group are currently working with Wychavon District Council to focus on gaining support from local landowners, endeavouring to spread the anti-litter message.

The next litter pick will take place on July 21st as part of #LoveParks week.
