THE challenges faced by a boy with a rare genetic disorder will inspire a participant when he tackles a 25-mile course.

Chris Paine, chairman of Kidderminster Choral and Operatic Society, will take part in the Rock Pound the Bounds event on Sunday.

He is hoping to raise awareness of two year-old Sam Hunt’s condition, Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS), which only affects about 600 people across the world.

Sam’s mother, Salli, is a member of the operatic society and has an active role in the Smith-Magenis Foundation, a charity supporting people with the condition.

Mr Paine, 50, said: “The disease is so rare and doesn’t get that much support because not many people know about it, so we thought it would be good to try and raise its profile.

“I know from speaking to Salli and her husband, Nick, that it’s not easy bringing up a child with the condition and they need all the help they can get.”

SMS is caused by a missing chromosome and can lead to learning disabilities, delays in a child’s physical development and behavioural problems.

The charity funds reserach into the condition and stages conferences and events for parents to learn more and socialise.

Mrs Hunt said: “It can be difficult bringing up a child with SMS and new parents really benefit from being given information and support.”

The 25-mile Pound the Bounds circuit stretches around the whole of the Rock parish, including parts of the Wyre Forest.

It will be the third time Mr Paine has taken on the challenge and he hopes to raise £1,000.

“I’m overwhelmed by Chris’s kindness and I’m so pleased he wants to help the charity,” Mrs Hunt added.
