POLICE have reiterated their warning for residents to be on their guard for scam calls after recent incidents.

Earlier this week the Worcester News reported on two incidents in which criminals posed as police sergeants, and conned victims into handing over cash.

In the first incident a man in his 70s received a call to his landline from two men posing as police sergeants claiming to be from the fraud squad, and later the victim handed money to a courier. In the second a couple in their 80s received a call from a man claiming to be a police officer from London, and money was also handed to a courier.

A Worcester man, who wished to remain anonymous, has said he received a similar scam call to his landline on Wednesday.

He said two people with Jamaican accents posed as detective sergeant Clarke and police constable Evans from the Met Police’s serious crime unit.

“They claimed money had been taken out of my account, which had been spent in London,” he said.

“They asked who I banked with, and how much money should be in the account.

“I said ‘I don’t think you are a real copper’. That was as far as it went, and I hung up.”

The man added he didn’t hand over any cash and had contacted West Mercia Police.

South Worcestershire Integrated Offender Management Team has again warned people to be aware of scam calls, tweeting: “Scotland Yard won’t call and ask you to help investigate a crime, which involves you buying a £10,000 watch - later collected by a #FakeCop. This is a scam, please warn elderly relatives.”

On the recent scam calls Sergeant Simon Hallam, West Mercia Police, said: “We are urging members of the public, particularly those who are elderly, to be vigilant against potential fraudsters.

“If you have any concerns, take the individual’s name, details and a contact number and call to check their authenticity - genuine callers will not mind doing this.

“If you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of a crime, please get in touch as we can only help if we are aware of it.”

Anyone with information on the calls is asked to phone West Mercia Police on 101.
