MALVERN Theatres is expanding its relaxed theatre offering, following the success of its relaxed film screenings.

The arts venue in Grange Road welcomed nearly 150 people to its most recent relaxed cinema screening, four months after the first showing attracted 25 people.

Malvern Theatres has now programmed several live theatre relaxed performances, including a showing of Great Expectations on Friday, February 16 at 1pm, and performances of The Little Matchgirl and Hansel and Gretel.

The theatre is also offering access performances, including audio-described performances of Spamalot and A Streetcar Named Desire and a captioned performance of The Little Matchgirl.

Bridget Lloyd, head of engagement and creative learning at Malvern Theatres, said: “We knew this would be a life-improving offering for our community and were delighted when 25 people attended our first relaxed screening, so to welcome 150 people just four performances later is wonderful.

“It was particularly lovely to see the very youngest visitors interacting with the older people. We want the theatre to be a place where everyone feels welcome”

Carer Tracy Miller from Pound Farm Care Home, Gorsley, said: “Going to the cinema is a very normal thing to do, but some of our group would struggle in a regular film showing. The relaxed screenings are brilliant.”

Carer Teresa Loveridge from Merrivale Farm, Tarrington, said: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It’s easy access for people with disabilities and it’s good that no one has to feel embarrassed about making noise or moving around. It’s been a really good day.”

Grandma Frances Victory also came along with daughter Renata Rai and grandchildren Eliyah, aged three, and Remy, one. She said: “It’s a really lovely thing to do and it’s so inclusive. It’s priced at a sensible level and it’s so nice to have tea and chat together afterwards.”

Anyone is welcome to attend relaxed performances, but they are tailored especially for people who find regular auditorium settings challenging including, but not limited to, people living with dementia, autism spectrum conditions, people with learning difficulties, and parents with babies.
