MEMBERS of a church in Worcester have celebrated their centenary with a service.
Worcester mayor Councillor Mike Layland joined members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Severn Street to mark the occasion on Saturday.
The church was started in Worcester 100 years ago by evangelist Arthur Rodd, who originally held tent meetings in Barbourne.
The congregation later met in rented halls in the High Street and Silver Street until 1963, when a church was built in Severn Street.
The Christian group, whose members believe Saturday rather than Sunday should be observed as a day of rest and worship, have met there ever since.
Today, the group supports the Maggs Day Centre in Deansway and St Paul’s Hostel in Tallow Hill and allows Alcoholics Anonymous to meet at their church.
Pastor Adrian Broome said: “We try to be outgoing and do what we can. We have a strong core belief in which we take Christ as the centre of everything we believe.”
Pastor Ian Sweeney, the president of the North England conference of Seventh-day Adventists, preached the celebration service which was followed by a lunch.
