No cheeky monkeys

MR Wood wonders why parents advertise the presence of a child in the car (Viewpoint June 7).

I have long understood the signs were originally intended to alert rescuers, in the event of an accident, to the need to check whether a child had been in the car and might have been thrown clear by the force of the accident.

This type of notice has proliferated and the purpose often seems to be to amuse (or irritate) the motorist in the car behind.

It is clear that many drivers do not remove the signs even when the "cheeky monkey" or "Daddy's little princess" is not aboard.
