RE: cats & irresponsible owners: I totally agree with Teresa Green's criticism of irresponsible cat owners but would warn her that she will be castigated by cat fanatics.
Can I through the medium of your letters page urge all cat owners and particularly those who claim they are also bird and wild animal lovers to read the survey entitled Look What the Cat Brought In' published by the Mammal Society.
Statistics show that cats have become this country's top pet' which has directly resulted in the marked decline of most garden birds according to the RSPB, not an organisation noted for making wild claims.
Since according to the Cats Protection League, one un-neutered female cat can be responsible, in five years, for 20,000 descendants, the RSPB's claim certainly seems believable.
The statistics published by the Mammal Society would seem to confirm this and show just what a threat to all types of small wildlife domestic cats actually are when they are allowed to wander at will at night.
I write as someone who has owned both dogs and cats and believe that there should be equality within the law on cat and dog ownership forcing all pet owners to be more responsible.
Negligent cat owners should be forced to accept far greater responsibility for their wandering marauding pets and their unwanted offspring.
The Mammal Society's vice chairman said that cat owners should keep their pets indoors at night to ensure the future of British wildlife.
Some time ago I wrote criticising irresponsible cat owners and signed my name.
I received hate mail and abusive phone calls including one from a lady' who wished me dead since my life was of less worth than any of her eight cats' so I will protect my anonymity on this occasion with a nom-de-plume.
It is noticeable that those who cannot put up a logical argument in defence of anti-social practices resort to abuse, threats and violence thereby inhibiting constructive debate.
