I’VE never had long hair.

And when my hair started breaking off in the ‘mohawk’ section of the top of my head about an inch-and-a-half from my scalp I started to panic that I never would have long hair no matter what I tried.

So, I decided to seek the help of Andrea Beers at Andrea Beers Hair Salon, in Mill Street, Kidderminster.

Upon walking in the salon, having never visiting before and not knowing what to expect, I was greeted by a friendly staff member who took my coat and showed me round the drinks area (where they provide tea, coffee, and soft drinks free of charge for customers to help themselves) and asked me to take a seat on their massive, and very comfortable, corner sofa.

Andrea came over to me shortly and asked what we were doing with me hair. I explained that earlier in the year I had a completely different look. On that day I had attended the salon with breaking, dark reddy/brown hair and a short fringe that was brushed to the side. However, in spring, and throughout most of summer, I sported lilac colour hair, which required a lot of bleaching, but that then it seemed to be in great condition and I was unsure what was going wrong now and wanted help saving it. She explained that the crème used to keep my lilac colour (as it wasn’t a semi-permanent dye, I literally had to top the colour up every day with this crème and a lot of conditioner) probably masked the condition of my hair, and that now I was darker, my real hair was showing through.

We agreed that there was nothing for it but to cut off the very badly damaged parts and put in some layers to blend in the short ‘mohawk’ I had gained.

I was then taken to have my hair washed and conditioned by another staff member before being sat in front of a full length mirror with Andrea scissor-ready.

She sprayed some Oil Miracle Oil Mist on to my hair to try to keep the moisture in my dry locks and started on shortening the overall length. She cut very quickly, and confidently, and it wasn’t long until she was moving on to the layers.

Andrea was careful not to shorten anywhere any more than she had to as she knew before the breakage I was attempted to make my hair the same length all over, and expertly blended in different lengths of layers from the front to the back.

Some Repair Rescue Sealed Ends cream was rubbed into my hair, to ‘stick together’ the split ends that couldn’t be cut due to length and the ones that weren’t really that bad, and some body serum and she moved on to drying.

Then it was time to cut my fringe.

I am the worst customer when it comes to fringe cutting. Too long and I will cut it myself at home, too short and I will cry until it grows back.

But my half-broken, half-slated fringe which was brushed aside when I came in, ended up in a perfectly straight line, cut into slightly to match the jagged layers.

I decided to go for a ‘funky’ finish and Andrea used Thrill texture fibre gum, which involved rubbing some into her hands and throwing what looked like spider’s web pieces of it onto my hair before ruffling it up.

I left the salon feeling completely different, with a look I had not imagined myself to have, and feeling like I had found my new hairdresser.
