IN the space of five days we ‘ooh-ed’ and ‘aah-ed’ at a flamboyant Latino circus, sang along to a bass-playing dinosaur and swerved round budding Lewis Hamiltons on the dodgems.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Butlins at Bognor Regis on England’s sunny south coast.
Yours truly, five-year-old Nicholas and his grandparents had such a fab time that we spent the weekend afterwards feeling quite deflated.
Having to cook my own breakfast and dinner after tucking into tasty grub at the Yacht Club didn’t help. (Don’t tell my other half but one night I had TWO dinners!) We stayed in a well equipped Gold apartment, a short walk from the resort’s Splash Waterworld – Nick loved the jets, slides and bubble pool – and the Skyline Pavilion, which houses entertainment venues, bars, restaurants and assorted amusements.
After dinner, dressed in our best summer togs, we’d head to the Skyline to catch a show or two.
First night stars in the massive Centre Stage were Kate and (dancing dog) Gin, finalists from this year’s Britain’s Got Talent and their Dancing Queen routine. Handy tip: get there early if you want a good seat during peak holiday times.
The circus was probably my highlight of the week with the toe-tapping soundtrack matching the young performers’ moves on the trapeze, vault, unicycle and rope. Younger guests were held spellbound by the fun happenings in the Puppet Castle and lapped up everything involving the Skyline Gang, Bob the Builder, Billy Bear and his cuddly pals.
Bingo fans can enjoy daily games while outdoor attractions include a nine hole crazy golf course (additional cost) fairground rides, trampolines and activities including football, archery and volleyball.
There’s so much going on, you don’t need to leave the resort, though in next week’s paper I’ll be checking out some nearby places of interest.
Prices at Butlins Bognor Regis start from £64 per person per break based on a family of four sharing a Silver self-catering apartment on a three night break in September. For added luxury, try Shoreline Hotel at the resort from £45pp per break based on a family of four (two adults and two children aged two to 14 years) sharing a Hooks Cabin on a room only basis. Prices include accommodation, all live entertainment and more than 50 free activities.
