Xtra reveals the key beauty trends we'll all be wearing for autumn/winter.

It's time to do the opposite of a spring clean on your make-up bag. Think 'autumnal reinvention' instead.

Beachy hair and coral lips just aren't going to work during the autumn/winter months so give yourself a seasonal makeover quick-smart.

Whether you favour Dita Von Teese's made-up perfection or Kate Moss-style relaxed rock chic, there's a fashion-led look for you.

Make room on your dressing table for the latest must-haves in hair and make-up. The A/W 08 catwalks show us how to fast-forward our beauty routines into the new season.

MAKE-UP LOOKS ABSTRACT EYES :: AS SEEN AT: Paul Smith, Lanvin, Vivienne Westwood.

Last season's Amy Winehouse-style winged eye has moved on. For A/W "black is back; big time," according to Pat McGrath for Max Factor.

"The eye is heavily adorned with abstractions in black using kohl liners, shadows, liquids and creams to create sultry, smouldering appeal."

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: Max Factor Colour Perfection Eyeshadow in Star-Studded Black, £6.49 (nationwide).

VAMP LIPS :: AS SEEN AT: Jaeger London, Luella, Chloe.

Classic red lips have darkened this season to a bordeaux-rich pout. Think forbidden fruits like plums and grapes for a gothic intensity.

"It's ethereal, dark and dreamy," says James Kaliardos for MAC. "Transparent pale skin with hardcore vamp lips."

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: MAC Dubonnet Lipstick, £11 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk).

PUMPED UP NUDES :: AS SEEN AT: Roksanda Ilincic, Matthew Williamson, Marios Schwab.

Book that facial. Perfect skin is a must for this natural nude look.

"Inspired by 50s Hitchcock, there was a focus on illuminated, fluid skin, contrasted with defined brows," explains Val Garland for Revlon.

Add to that a naturally 'pumped up nude' shade on lips, matted down with fingers.

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: Revlon Colourstay Liquid Makeup with Soft Flex, £12.99 (0800 085 2716).

METALLICA :: AS SEEN AT: Ashley Isham, Moschino, Rodnik.

Gold, silver, bronze, pewter... futuristic, modern metallics adorned models' eyes on the A/W catwalks.

"Ornamental touches, both soft and bold, are added to the eye with metallic silver and gold pencils and high-shine shadows," says Pat McGrath for Max Factor.

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: Jemma Kidd Midnight Jewels Palette, £19.50 (Boots nationwide).

HAIR STYLES WIRED :: AS SEEN AT: Julien Macdonald, Luella, Allegra Hicks.

"She's wild and charged, rebellious and defiant," says Malcolm Edwards for L'Oreal of the A/W 'Wired' hair look.

"The toughness is made more feminine with an airy, weightless and anarchic texture that has been created with a plethora of tools - crimpers, tongs, flat irons and wavers."

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: BaByliss Pro Crimper 200, £15 (08705 133 191).

VINTAGE NOSTALGIA :: AS SEEN AT: Gavin Douglas, Qasimi, Diane Von Furstenberg.

Bed-head hair isn't going to cut it for this trend.

"This is perfectly perfect Hollywood inspired hair, with a contemporary feel," explains Jan Przemyk, Toni&Guy international artistic director.

"Fusions of 20s and 40s finger waves and glassy, super-shine finishes... It's all about achieving the perfect wave, with vintage wet sets and nostalgic old school techniques making a comeback."

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: label.m Shine Mist, £10.50 (0870 770 8080).

MODERN KNOT AS SEEN AT: Ralph Lauren, Matthew Williamson, Versace.

High and low; loose and tight, modern knots are where it's at with up-do hair this season.

"It's not often that glam and practical come together, but the new chignons do just that," reveals Guido Palau, Redken creative consultant. "Wear low knots with this season's whimiscal hats, and pair high buns with chunky sweaters or lush scarves."

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum, £15.95 (0800 444 880).

THE DRAPE :: AS SEEN AT: Aquascutum, Chloe, Osman Yousefzada.

"This is by far the most modest trend of the season: it's almost puritanical," says Malcolm Edwards for L'Oreal.

"It's all about framing the face and draping the hair over the ears."

The look was seen on the catwalks windswept and relaxed, or tightly pulled back, librarian-style.

:: MUST-HAVE PRODUCT: L'Oreal Tecni.Art Full Volume Extra mousse, £9.25 (0800 072 6699).

:: TRIED AND TESTED Uh oh, pasty complexion setting in already? Hold on to that post-summer glow - even if it is out of a bottle! We test three facial tanners.

:: Dove Summer Glow SPF15 Daily Face Moisturiser, £6.99 (0800 085 1548) Brownie points for the surprise pleasant smell of this facial tanner. It's pretty subtle but I love the fact that this has SPF15 in it. Overall, I'd recommend for a winter glow on paler skin.

4/5 :: L'Occitane do Brasil Face Sunshine Veil, £15 (0207 907 0301/www.loccitane.co.uk) My face looked tanned with this product - but so too did my fingers - as it stained them quite badly. The typical fake tan smell is overwhelming at first but it does result in a strong colour. Best suited to olive complexions.

3/5 :: Chanel Soleil Identite Face Self-Tanner SPF8, £22.50 (0207 493 3836) Every time I've worn this product I've been asked if I've been away on hols! Not only does it give a fabulous glow to your face the moisturiser is really luxurious too, and with added SPF, it's a real three-in-one product. Worth the splurge!

5/5 :: BUY IT NOW If you're still in the flushes of fashion week fever, snap up designer Galliano's first signature fragrance, John Galliano. It's £42 for 40ml, available from September 28 at Harrods.
