WRITERS, book lovers, magazine fans and digital gurus will descend on the Library of Birmingham next week.

Volume: Birmingham’s Art, Book and Print Fair is at the library between December 5-7 and is part of the library’s Discovery Season, will host speakers, panel discussions and workshops on critical topics which affect the independent publishing, bookmaking and writing industries.

Bringing together organisations such as Writing West Midlands, Birmingham Zine Festival, An Endless Supply, Birmingham City University Typography Hub, Grand Union and Eastside Projects, panel discussions will cover subjects as diverse as digital technology and how it will enhance publishing and writing, copyright, libraries of the future and the publishing economy.

Visitors to Volume will also be able to participate in a number of interactive workshops where they can learn about roller printing, how to make a zine in one day, writing for digital outlets, letter pressing and reduction lino printing.

Lisa Meyer, creative director at Capsule, said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring Volume to Europe’s largest library. The publishing industry is ever-changing and as teams and processes evolve, organisations need to integrate with other media fields from across the publishing landscape if they wish to survive.

“Recent years have seen an increase in the DIY culture of bookmaking as people look to it as a way of publishing their own works or as a simple hobby. Volume will not only look at the issues affecting the industry but will also act as a celebration of craftsmanship for those who work independently.”

On 6-7 December the Library of Birmingham will also play host to The Fair, which showcases the very best books, prints and artworks for sale from an international selection of independent publishers, printworks, artists and organisations including Werkplaats Typographie, Dent-De-Leone, Existencil and Imprint Press.
