Male set for March return

PUNCHING postman Chris Male will make a return to the ring at a special fight night.

The 30-year-old Dudley featherweight had been considering his future in the sport after suffering his maiden defeat to Josh Warrington when the two met for the English title back in November.

But Male’s name has been included on a bumper bill at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday March 9, in a show which will celebrate 70 years of professional boxing at the venue.

Trainer Shaun Cooper says he never had any doubts his man would be back.

He said: “I knew he would not walk away, he did not want to leave the sport on a defeat.

“The only reason he lost to Warrington was ring rust, he had been out of the ring for 18 months before the fight and it hurt him.

“He’s been in the gym over Christmas helping Steven Pearce get ready for Prizefighter and will start his own training camp next week.

“He wants two fights and is then keen to face Warrington again.”

Male’s training partner Andy Robinson is another man on the Civic bill, which is also set to feature Priory Park trio Ricky Summers, Lance Brooks and Luke Paddock.

The bill is topped by Birmingham middleweight Thomas Costello’s showdown for the English title with Tony Hill.

In a special show, the doors will open in the afternoon and every boxer who has ever fought at the famous venue will be presented with a medal. There will also be memorabilia stalls and tribute bands.

Promoter PJ Rowson said: “For me the Civic Hall is the best boxing venue.

“There’s a great atmosphere there on fight night and I wanted to mark the occasion in a special day.

“It’s something for the Midlands to be extremely proud of.”
