Ghent returning better than before says coach

FIGHT fans have been told to expect a new and improved Tommy Ghent this Sunday.

The highly-rated Priory Park light-middleweight takes on Lithuania’s Alexsas Vaseris at Birmingham’s HMV Institute, his first fight for more than a year.

After a bright start to his professional career in which he picked up three wins, injury and personal issues have kept the 20-year-old inactive.

But coach Paul Gough says his man will return better than before.

He said: “He’s changed his style a little bit, he is a lot more relaxed and he seems even sharper than before.

“He is enjoying it and you can see it in his boxing, there is nothing troubling him.

“He wants to get back out there and stay as busy as we can keep him.”

Ghent is signed to Matchroom Sports but Gough is keen for his charge to fight on local shows before at first.

Vaseris has won just two of his 11 bouts but has been stopped only once. Gough says the Lithuanian brings with him an element of uncertainty.

He said: “It’s like stepping into the unknown, you don’t really know what these guys are like.

“When you are fighting a domestic fighter it’s easier to get information.

“But Tommy has fought foreign guys before in the amateurs and I’m sure it won’t faze him in the slightest.”

He added: “Tommy has been out of the ring for a while. It’s been frustrating but you can’t rush these things.

“I’m looking to keep him boxing locally for now and then we will see whatever comes up with Matchroom.”

Priory Park’s Ryan Corrigan makes his professional debut on the show. He is pencilled in to face Vaseris’ fellow Lithuanian Simas Volosinas.
