Davies takes British title

RYAN Davies showed he is not scared of stepping up to the plate after claiming a British kickboxing title.

The Kingswinford fighter, who stunned even himself by winning a world title at 65-kilograms last autumn, defeated Derby’s George Downey over five rounds on points to win the ISKA crown at 69kgs in Birmingham.

It was a particularly pleasing win for the 19-year-old, who revealed the fight was arranged after Downey called him out.

He said: “Since winning the world title I’ve had a lot more attention and Downey asked for me specifically.

“There was nothing nasty, it was a friendly rivalry but it’s still nice to go and do the business.

“I had two months to prepare and there was a decent crowd of about 600 there, 150 of which were my fans so there was a great atmosphere.”

Davies, who works full-time as an instructor at the School of Black Belts, plans to turn professional in the next couple of years.
