Stourbridge blow their promotion prospects
11:10am Thursday 12th September 2013 in Sport
STOURBRIDGE saw their Birmingham League Division Two promotion prospects go up in smoke after suffering a two wicket defeat at Coventry and North Warwickshire.
Victory would have given the Amblecote side a chance of a third successive promotion — especially as other results went in their favour.
Instead, Stourbridge opted to bat first and soon found themselves back in the pavillion with just 136 — Josh Banks top-scoring with 40.
Coventry held their nerve in reply, reaching 142-8 from 27 overs, Danico Philmon standing firm with 73 not out to see his side home despite the efforts of James Wood who finished with figures of 5-31.
Stourbridge skipper Richard Bradley blamed himself for the defeat.
He said: “I did the wrong thing by batting first. The wicket clearly did more for them, than it did for us.
“The truth of the matter is that we haven’t been good enough. We’ve lost form since the defeat to Eastnor and we’ve come up short.
“Our performance at Coventry was made even more frustrating when we heard that Harborne had lost.”
Stourbridge bring down the curtain on this season with a trip to rock bottom Fordhouses.
Bradley said: “It’s still been a decent season.”
