Hales hockeymen create club record after crushing Kings
11:41am Thursday 31st October 2013 in Sport
OUTSTANDING Old Halesonians crushed Kings Heath 10-0 in the Midland Hockey League — a performance which saw them rewrite the club’s record books.
Hales had nine different names on the scoresheet, an unprecedented feat in the club’s history.
From the 14 squad members on parade, only goalkeeper Steve Charlton and his four defenders failed to score.
It was also Hales first win of the season from what had been a disappointing start.
There was little indication of what was to come as Hales held a slender 2-0 lead at half-time through goals from skipper Chris Whiley and Graham Knight.
But the second period saw Hales cut loose as they netted eight times.
Knight quickly grabbed his second goal before Harry Hughes made it 4-0, from which point Kings Heath fell apart.
Paul Harrold plundered a fifth before Doug Houghton made it 6-0 after dancing his way past five defenders.
Tom Bulteel, pictured, made it 7-0 before Paul Woodall scored Hales eighth goal from a penalty corner.
Graham Knight was then sent to the sin bin, but that didn’t stop Hales adding further goals through Charles Palmer and Josh Randhawa.
Hales second XI beat Streetly 5-1, while the thirds crashed 10-0 to Olton and West Warwicks.
The fourths lost 3-0 to Birmingham University and the fifths were crushed by Khalsa 9-0.
Hales Ladies snatched a 5-4 success over Kings Heath, while the seconds went down 4-0 to Bromsgrove.
