Clarke is in with a chance of tour success
4:40pm Thursday 27th February 2014 in Sport
STOURBRIDGE’S Steven Clarke is still in with an outside chance of snatching a podium place overall in the Garmin Arenacross Tour this weekend.
The final event of the indoor racing championship crashes into Wembley Arena for an all-action series showdown on Saturday.
Cramming seven rounds of world-class racing into an ultra-intense six-week period has created a tour unmatched anywhere outside of America.
A total prize purse of £100,000 has helped to attract an international field, with 10 nationalities represented and riders coming from as far away as Australia, California and South Africa.
Star of the series has been twice European SX champ Fabien Izoird (Apico LPE Kawasaki). The Frenchman has won three main events and four head-to-head finals for an unassailable lead, but the fight for second is wide open with five men still in with a mathematical chance.
Heading the battle for silver is Aussie Daniel McCoy (MBO Sport ASA Yamaha), but rock-hard Frenchman Cyrille Coulon (SR75-Molson Suzuki) is closing him down. Clarke has shown great form this year with two main event wins. He crashed out at Sheffield but will be back for Wembley along with Elliott Banks-Browne (Buildbase Honda) and American Tyler Villopoto (Oakleaf Kawasaki), who’ve both been forced to sit out rounds after picking up injuries.
