Cradley to renew historic Wolves rivalry

First published in Sport by

CRADLEY will renew their fierce rivalry with Wolverhampton as both teams compete in a four team tournament at Monmore Green on Monday.

They will be joined by sides representing Birmingham and Oxford in the Premier League standard meeting which is already drawing plenty of interest.

The four historic sides will compete over 16 heats before a top scorers race for the Gary Peterson Memorial Shield, in memory of the Wolves rider who lost his life racing in the 70s.

It provides a brilliant opportunity to see Cradley and Wolves battle once again on the Monmore Green shale on a night sure to evoke memories of the unforgettable battles between the two clubs in years gone by.

Admission prices have been slashed to just £10 for adults and £1 for kids, with plenty of Birmingham and Oxford supporters expected to make the short trip to see their defunct clubs in action once again.

Cradley have unveiled Gino Manzares as the first member of their side for the event with several more popular names set to be involved.

Manzares will follow in the footsteps of some of America's greatest ever riders who have donned Heathens colours.

Chairman Nigel Pearson is thrilled to be involved in the event - and he is delighted to see Manzares agree to ride for their side.

He said: "We announced Gino Manzares to fans at our evening with Billy Hamill on Sunday and he had a standing ovation. He's proud to be able to ride for Cradley like so many Americans have done - Penhall, Schwartz, Hancock and Hamill.

"This will also show everyone once again what passion there is for speedway amongst these clubs. We are delighted to be a part of it and I will be interested to see the response to a Premier League standard team for Cradley."
