Hagley lose despite determined effort against league leaders

HAGLEY couldn't get the better of table-toppers Worcester despite a spirited effort when the sides met last weekend.

Hagley travelled to The Gordon Jones Memorial Ground as they looked to improve on their mid-table position in Division One of the Worcestershire County League.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, opener Lee Maggs was the first to fall when he was bowled for 18 by Liam Weston. The early wicket was to be the first of four for the bowler.

The hosts had Hagley two down for 66 when fellow opener Asa Robinson was trapped lbw by Mohammad Adeel for 37.

The visitors were then rocking as captain Paul Morgan, batting at number four, followed him to the pavilion after hitting just one run before becoming Weston's second wicket of the day.

However, number three James Spavin hit a solid 69 to help Hagley recover. He formed a small partnership with John Porter (16) as he set about quickly increasing his side's score.

His innings was hindered as he failed to find a partner as Hagley completed their 40 overs for 198.

In reply, Worcester also lost an early wicket when Simon Keyte was bowled by Dave Painter for nine.

Russell Pitchers (33) and number three James Padden (29) looked to edge their side towards their target. But when they Pitchers and his replacement Ian Cottrill (0) fell in quick succession, the home side were 57-3.

Dan Keyte (66 not out) and Mohammad Adeel (33 not out) did enough to see their side to victory with overs running out.

Hagley will now welcome Belbroughton to Hagley Park this Saturday (1pm start).

In the same division, it proved to be a frustrating time for both Pedmore and Belbroughton.

Pedmore's contest away at Redditch was abandoned with them on 102-2. Opener Danny McDonnell (32) was still unbeaten at the crease.

They will now welcome Pershore this Saturday (1pm).

Belbroughton's game at Hackman's Gate against Evesham fell victim to the weather before a ball was bowled.

They will now travel to take on near neighbours Hagley this Saturday (1pm).
