Director of rugby Neil Mitchell is hoping Stourbridge's bad luck with injuries is behind them after they returned to winning ways.

Stour secured their first win in four matches with a 27-18 away victory against Hull last Saturday.

The club still have four long-term absentees, including full-back Tom Jarvis, but the return of Mark George, Gary Dipple, Nathan Bressington and Ejike Uzoigwe all helped the Stourton Park outfit gain a much-needed bonus point success.

Mitchell said: "We managed to botch together a bonus point win despite not being at full strength. Hopefully our bad luck is now behind us.

"Other teams should have injury trouble as the season goes on, so it's important we now keep getting those wins to make sure we are in the mix."

Against Hull, both sides struggled for continuity in the first half hour as play was littered with penalty offences and handling errors.

But a brace of tries just before half time by winger Stef Cooksammy eased Stour into a 13-6 lead that was never relinquished.

Hull’s lineout was coming under pressure as second row Ciaran Moore had success stealing the ball.

Frustrated by seeing Moore pick off another of his lineout throws, Matthews went off his feet at the next breakdown to earn himself a rest in the sin bin. Stour kicked for the corner again and pressed the attack but hooker Jack Lea’s drive was held up over the line. Hull’s seven-men pack couldn’t take the pressure at the subsequent scrummage, giving referee Will Halford little option but to award a penalty try.

Hull started to generate some continuity in attack and were able to set up an attacking lineout in the Stour 22 just as Matthews returned, prop Mike Jobling at the base of the resulting catch and drive that was trundled over the line to score the hosts’ first try.

Stour returned to the attack but were unable to turn pressure into points as the Hull defences held firm.

A spilled pass set up a Hull counter that was worked to Matthews who ran in from halfway before the conversion brought Hull back within two points with seven minutes to play.

With the replacement benches emptied, both sides tried to raise the tempo.

Chasing the result Hull attempted to run from deep in their 22, playing into Stour’s hands when a runner got isolated and was turned over by flanker Eji Uzoigwe. The ball was worked wide to winger Nathan Bressington who gratefully took the pass to round the cover and score the bonus point try. Hearn converted from the touchline to make the final score 18-27.

Meanwhile, Mitchell confirmed his is still looking to add to his side after hooker Jack Lea returned to Moseley.

He is speaking to two props in the hope of adding one of them to the squad.
