LYE Town manager Martin Thomas gave an honest assessment of his team's title chances after they moved to the top of the Midland Football League's Premier Division.

Back-to-back wins over Boldmere St Michaels last Saturday and then Kirby Muxlow on Tuesday night saw Town bounce back following a rare defeat against Coventry Sphinx.

Thomas said: "Are we contenders? Yes. Can we win it? Only time will tell.

"At the end of the day, we have already lost eight games, which I think is too many. But you never say never in football. We are just concentrating on winning as many games as possible.

"Just finishing in the top three or four would be a big achievement but it is nice for this football club to be where it is at the moment."

Away at Boldmere, forward Ricky Anslow hit four before James Spray added another in a brilliant 5-0 victory.

Anslow and Spray were again on the scoresheet at home against Kirby Muxlow on Tuesday.

The visitors to Stourbridge Road had taken an early lead before Lye hit back. Town's task got easier when Kirby were reduced to ten men before the break.

Other goals from Max Bissell and Chris Russell secured a 4-1 win.

"We were extremely good against Boldmere and were the better side against Kirby Muxlow," added Thomas.

"It was very pleasing how the players reacted to the defeat against Coventry the week before."

Lye have been boosted by the arrival of forward Craig Gregg from AFC Wulfrunians.
