STOURBRIDGE welterweight champion Sam Eggington says he never thought he’d be capable of winning a British title when his fight career began.

But ‘The Savage’ did just that when he handed Glenn Foot his first defeat as their contest in Manchester last Saturday night was halted in the ninth due to a bad cut above Foot’s left eye.

The clash saw Eggington soon begin to dominate as his superior reach took its toll.

Scorecards confirmed the Stourbridge man’s dominance when the fight was halted. Eggington was well ahead with the judges scoring it 80-71, 80-72 and 79-72.

It means the 21-year-old has added the British Welterweight title to his Commonwealth belt to continue a stunning rise up the boxing ranks.

“I still can’t believe it,” he said. “I never expected to be winning big titles when I came into the sport so it really is a dream.

“It’s brilliant and has been a real whirlwind getting to where I am now.

“The fight was much easier than I thought it was going to be.

“Everyone was telling me it would be my hardest fight during the build up and I believed them. But everything went to plan.

“I think a lot of that can be put down to my own improvement. I’m a young fighter and still have things to learn and feel like I am improving all the time.

“I have also pushed myself very hard in the build up and have been preparing since the end of last year. I couldn’t wait to get going on the night.

Eggington also praised trainer Jon Pegg for masterminding his success.

“A lot of credit also has to go to Jon. His game plan was spot on and worked brilliantly.

“However, it is not just about that one fight. He must have seen something in me and has given me his time to help me progress.

“I didn’t get into boxing to win titles. I went to the gym and asked him to make me a journeyman fighter that could earn some cash.

“He could have just done that, thrown me in the ring and made some cash. But instead he has put in the work and got me to where I am now.”

Eggington said he will now take a well-earned break before preparing for a title defence in Birmingham in October.
