LUKE Williams proved an unlikely hero for Dudley Sports in their 2-1 win over Wellington Amateurs on Saturday.

Sports won courtesy of goals from Stuart Hillman and Shepherd Machingauta to follow up a 4-0 win at Black Country Rangers on Tuesday with Hillman scoring all four.

Midfielder Williams was originally ruled out with a foot injury sustained in the 2-2 draw at Wellington a week earlier but when keeper Sam Pearson was unable to make it stood in as a last-minute replacement.

Boss Tony Gore said: “Luke had filled in as a keeper for his Sunday team a couple of teams and though he didn’t have a great number of shots to save he did great. The only time they got past him he made a good save and the ball went in off Matt Hanson’s knee and there was nothing either of them could do.

“It’s funny how sometimes you stumble on things you didn’t know you had but it’s nice to know if we ever have a keeper sent off or injured and he’s on the bench or the pitch that he can fill in.

“To be honest the goalkeeping position has been a problem for us and Luke was the fifth to take the number one jersey this season. Hopefully we can have something sorted by the weekend.”

Gore also revealed leading scorer Hillman has rejected a move away from the club despite interest in several quarters.

“Stuart is enjoying his football, playing every week and is a loyal lad but there are teams showing an interest in him.”

Dudley are without a midweek game but entertain a Shawbury United side on Saturday who have yet to drop a point in five West Midland Regional League games.

l Dudley Town are sixth, a place above Sports after drawing 2-2 with Black Country Rangers to follow a 3-0 defeat of Tipton Town last Tuesday.

Town visit Shawbury United tonight, entertain Stone Old Alleyians on Saturday and go Malvern Town on Tuesday.
