WOLLASTON Tennis Club reached a new milestone when its newly established singles ladder played its 100th match.

Wollaston, predominantly a tennis club that plays doubles tennis, started a new singles ladder after last years Club Championships, with the first matches played in October.

Through the winter period however, the ladder has really taken off, with challenges flying between the 22 members that joined the ladder.

Last week saw Shaun Ryder and Paul Adams playing the 100th match of the ladder, a really incredible achievement given the initial matches have all been played through the winter period.

The ladder now moves into a qualifying period, with players looking to be in the top eight positions by May 22. Those qualifying will play in the WLTC Singles Ladder Finals event between May 22 and June 6, the period of the 2016 French Open. It is planned to hold the final on Wollaston's artificial clay courts on the day of the French Open Final.

The club maintains its strong representation in the local doubles leagues with men's, ladies and mixed teams competing. It also invested £130k in 2014 with four new courts and improved floodlighting is now investing to upgrade the other four courts in April to ensure all of its eight courts are in peak condition.

Ladder organiser Richard Waldron said: “It was clear after the 2015 club championships that the demand for competitive singles was high at Wollaston and we want to grow this in 2016."
