A FOOTBALL tournament in memory of a much-loved player so nearly had a fairy tale ending.

The Steve Bragg Memorial Tournament was held at Summerhill School, Kingswinford, on Sunday, April 23.

The event – organised by Hartshill Strollers Walking Football Club - attracted eight teams from as far afield as Leicestershire.

The tournament was named in memory of Strollers member Steve Bragg who died from a heart attack while on holiday in Spain in April 2016.

The father-of-two – from Tividale – was just 51.

Among the competing teams were Old Studs which consisted of Steve’s old friends as well as his son James.

Old Studs – a hastily-assembled outfit – won through to the final but were beaten 1-0 by LPF88 of Leicestershire.

Mark Grazier, chairman of Hartshill Strollers, said: “It was a fantastic tournament – the first in the club’s history – played in perfect weather.

“It was particularly poignant that Old Studs did so well, just falling at the final hurdle. They played exceptionally well and it would have just been perfect if they had lifted the trophy – but it was not to be.

“Steve Bragg was a highly-gifted and much-loved member of Hartshill Strollers. His untimely death shocked everyone.

“We are privileged to keep his memory alive through this tournament which we hope will be held annually.

“We are also delighted – and touched – that members of Steve’s family were able to attend the tournament as our special guests.”

More than 100 players, club helpers and spectators turned up for the high-energy tournament.

LPF88 put out hosts Hartshill Strollers 3-1 in the semi-final.
